Position Description: 

Subject to continued funding and staffing priorities, the Civil Practice has a Staff Attorney position in the HIV/AIDS Representation Project (H/ARP) to handle a diverse client case load. The attorney will be a member of a team of attorneys and paralegals who conduct off-site intake throughout New York City at various hospitals, health care centers and community based organizations that provide services to persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A). The Staff Attorney will also be expected to participate in the Single-Stop Program and staff off-site intake.

In this position, you will: handle individual representation and advocacy in a variety of civil legal proceedings with an emphasis in housing, government and public benefits, family and general civil law matters; community outreach and education as well as policy advocacy for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/As); conduct off-site intake throughout New York City at various hospitals, health care centers and community based organizations that provide services to persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/As); training, community outreach and education to individuals, local community-based organizations and housing advocates; policy advocacy on behalf of clients; coordination and collaborative work with other groups and organizations; represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community; conduct community education, training and outreach and promote the work of the office, the Project and the Civil Practice; work with pro bono lawyers; conduct off-site intake, including during evening hours; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

The ideal candidate must have: experience in housing litigation desirable, but not required; knowledge of family, public and government benefits law desirable, but not required; excellent written and oral advocacy skills; the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and manage a high volume of cases; demonstrated commitment and experience in public interest law and civil legal services; the ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations; excellent organizational skills; and admission to NYS practice is strongly preferred. Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required.
