Senior Staff Attorney

Description
Georgia Legal Services Program is a leader in creating equal access to justice and opportunities out of poverty for low-income Georgians. We fight for justice where it is most needed. Georgia Legal Services seeks a staff attorney to work in its Augusta office.

Responsibilities:

· Provide substantive and technical assistance to Central Leadership staff and Managing Attorneys in all GLSP Regional offices as needed

· Supervise assigned GLSP attorneys and paralegals including those in GLSP Regional offices

· Support with substantive expertise and supervise GLSP’s legal work in a variety of specific subject areas that may include unemployment, food stamps, education, housing, probate and additional emerging issues and areas of law

· For emerging issues and areas of law, develop practice materials and training; provide training to GLSP advocates

· Supervise specific GLSP attorneys and paralegals in Regional offices when local supervisors are not available, as requested by the Managing Attorney

· Coordinate supervision with the Managing Attorney

· Become familiar with the supervision practices and procedures in each GLSP regional office

· Document supervision details on cases in LegalServer

· In the event of a conflict with the Managing Attorney about supervision, convene a meeting with the Senior Director of Litigation & Advocacy for resolution

· Develop best practices for supervising advocates remotely

· Supervise legal interns

· Represent clients as assigned, though supervision is primary function

· Assumes case files and undertakes case work in various GLSP Regional offices as needed

· Other projects as assigned as needed

· New position with a primary purpose of supervising attorneys and paralegals in legal work where regional offices lack capacity

Requirements: 

· Flexibility and creativity required

· Ability to work with and manage staff who are located in GLSP Regional offices

· Ability to use or a commitment to learn technology to connect and manage staff in GLSP Regional offices

· Ability to adapt to changing environments and workloads

· Enthusiastic about supervising remotely

· Effective communicator

· Location flexible

· At least two years of experience representing persons with low incomes in civil cases

· The ability to work independently as well as work cooperatively with managing attorneys in all GLSP Regional offices

· Post COVID-19, the willingness to travel to all GLSP Regional offices on a as needed basis

· Supervised by the Senior Director of Litigation and Advocacy

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is dependent upon experience and background. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; birthday holiday; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible); 403B with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. GLSP offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
