Position Description: 

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking a full-time Human Resources Manager, based in its Minneapolis office while supporting all staff at the organization. The Human Resource Manager will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization’s mission and talent strategy.

BACKGROUND: MMLA is approximately a 180-person pro bono law firm. MMLA’s mission is to advocate for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy, and independent lives in their communities. MMLA provides civil legal representation to clients with low incomes and seniors in 21 counties in central Minnesota, and to people with disabilities throughout the state. MMLA’s Minneapolis office primarily serves clients who reside in Hennepin and Anoka Counties. MMLA receives funding from a variety of public and private sources and enjoys strong support from the organized bar.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Apply the principles of MMLA’s Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.
• Advise and collaborate with senior leadership to create and understand the organization’s goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
• Recommend, plan, lead, develop, coordinate, and implement policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization’s human resource compliance and strategy needs.
• Administer or oversee the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
• Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
• Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
• Collaborate, administer, and assist with design of employee benefit programs.
• Respond to or escalate employment and legal issues or disputes.
• Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
• Identify staffing and recruiting needs, developing, and executing best practices for hiring and talent management.
• Conduct research and analysis of organizational trends, including review of reports and metrics from the organization’s human resource information system (HRIS) or talent management system and verify the accuracy of the data.
• Monitor and ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance.

SALARY: $68,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Requirements: 

Required Qualifications:
• Five + (5+) years of experience as a Human Resources Manager, or equivalent experience.
• BA in human resource management, business, communication, or equivalent experience.
• Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
• Experience in project/process management and stakeholder engagement.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
• Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
• Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Preferred Qualifications:
• SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly preferred.
• Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems.
• Experience in a law firm or non-profit environment.
• Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences.
