Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) seeks a new staff attorney in our Elder, Health and Disability (EHD) Unit to focus on work around equitable access to health care and the elimination of health disparities. The attorney should have a strong commitment to health equity and racial and economic justice.
The staff attorney's responsibilities will include representing low-income families, people with disabilities, seniors, and other individuals in matters concerning access to health care, with a particular focus on people of color, immigrants, and homeless individuals. The attorney’s work will focus on systemic advocacy with policymakers to address health disparities. This includes advocacy with the Massachusetts Executive Office with Health and Human Services, work with other organizational partners, and collaboration with community groups to develop and advocate for policy changes that would improve access to equitable healthcare and coverage for low-income people of color.
The advocate will work with existing community partners to conduct outreach and develop new relationships with other community organizations in Boston neighborhoods. Knowledge of the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the varying neighborhoods and/or communities within the city of Boston is a plus. The advocate would also work in conjunction with the Community Outreach Subcommittee of GBLS' Racial Justice Committee and the EHD Racial Justice Group to coordinate the EHD outreach efforts with the broader efforts of GBLS.
The advocate will also address health disparities and the intersectionality of race, gender identity, immigration status, and disability, including LGBTQ youth of color, and people of color with disabilities through direct representation of clients at administrative hearings and in court. Finally, the advocate will be required to attend monthly and/or quarterly meetings with local and state-wide health centers
Salary is based on a union scale, which begins at $63,000 for an attorney with two years of experience. GBLS offers a generous benefits package, retirement contribution, a student loan repayment assistance plan for eligible attorneys, and generous PTO leave. The attorney will work out of the GBLS Boston office. However, at present due to COVID-19, work is handled both remotely and in the office.

Qualifications: Admission to or comity with the Massachusetts Bar is required. This position is for an attorney with 2-6 years’ experience and a demonstrated commitment to racial justice and antipoverty legal work. We are seeking an attorney who has experience effectively collaborating with community organizers and community groups and with other health care stakeholders. Some experience and knowledge of health and disability laws, particularly MassHealth (Medicaid), the Affordable Care Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act is preferred. The position requires strong analytical, research and writing skills and the ability to work individually and as part of a team.
