Position: The Portland Regional Office of Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO-PRO) is seeking a staff attorney to provide legal services to tenants in housing matters. This is a one-year, full-time position beginning in January.
The goal of this funding is to provide legal help to Portland renters facing displacement from their homes, neighborhoods and communities. The attorney will maintain an active housing caseload, regularly appear in eviction court and help develop and pilot an innovative approach to providing a range of legal services to tenants in eviction court. The attorney will prioritize legal representation to low-income, marginalized communities facing eviction, including tenants of color and immigrant communities. The attorney will also work closely with the Community Alliance of Tenants and social service organizations to reach clients.
Background: LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO’s eight regional offices serve low-income individuals throughout the state and maintain two specialized programs focused on services to farmworkers and issues impacting Native Americans. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies having the broadest possible impact on client community problems. The Portland Regional Office of LASO (LASO-PRO) serves a poverty population of more than 236,000. The office serves Multnomah, Clackamas, Hood River, Sherman and Wasco counties, a diverse service area requiring the ability to work effectively with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds.
Salary/Benefits: Salary depends on experience. Additional compensation for bilingual ability. Full benefits package including health insurance and 401(k) plan.
Qualifications: Current Oregon State Bar membership is required. Proven interest in and commitment to advocacy for the legal rights of low-income and other vulnerable populations. Demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, good judgment, initiative, and willingness to work as a team. Demonstrated knowledge or training in cultural competency and awareness of bias and effectively navigating bias. Housing law experience strongly preferred and Spanish language skills are a plus.
