HLI is seeking a full-time lawyer to provide direct legal services to people living with HIV/AIDS in the Greater Boston area. This is a wonderful opportunity to do meaningful work within a creative, social justice environment. The Staff Attorney will represent clients in state and federal courts and before administrative bodies or tribunals in cases involving a variety of areas of law, including housing evictions, Social Security benefits, CORI issues, and debtors’ rights. Tasks include all aspects of direct legal assistance, including pretrial and trial practice. The Staff Attorney will also train and supervise student interns and volunteer attorneys, as well as provide legal rights education to community groups, social service providers, and other JRI staff. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
· J.D. degree from an accredited law school, excellent academic credentials, and active member of the Massachusetts State Bar in good standing.
· At least 2 years of recent litigation experience, as well as demonstrated expertise in housing law and/or SSI/SSDI law.
· Ability to be sensitive to and work well with low-income individuals, people with psychiatric disabilities, people living with HIV/AIDS and/or Hepatitis C, people of color, people with a history of addiction, homelessness and/or incarceration, and people in the LGBTQ community.
· Excellent legal research and writing skills. Excellent oral advocacy skills.
· Excellent time management skills and ability to handle a demanding case load while maintaining client records in an accurate, timely and confidential manner.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and LexisNexis.
· Ability to travel throughout Greater Boston and Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
