The Office of the State Public Defender (OSPD) is seeking a Non-Capital Training Attorney with extensive appellate criminal defense experience who is committed to mentoring and developing attorneys handling non-capital appeals and postconviction matters in order to meet the qualifications to be lead counsel in death penalty cases. The Non-Capital Training Attorney will provide comprehensive guidance on non-capital appellate practice and will work closely with individual attorneys on all aspects of their non-capital cases, focusing on high quality, client-centered representation. The Non-Capital Training Attorney will also assist the Director of Non-Capital Appellate Representation with managing OSPD’s Non-Capital Appellate Representation Program and work collaboratively with OSPD staff to identify and address the program’s training needs.
We are seeking an experienced attorney with at least six years of legal practice, including criminal defense appellate litigation. The ideal candidate possesses deep knowledge of criminal law, state and federal constitutional provisions, and both non-capital and capital appellate and postconviction proceedings, skilled at analyzing complex legal problems, drafting clear written pleadings, monitoring legal developments, and maintaining strict confidentiality. In addition to handling complex cases independently, this role requires strong leadership: you will direct professional and clerical staff, mentor and supervise attorneys and interns, provide constructive feedback on briefs and oral arguments, and design training programs. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to foster an inclusive, collaborative, and professional work environment, build trusting relationships with a dieverse array of clients who may have serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or intellectual disabilities and understand how race impacts the criminal legal system. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
