Join the Fight for Equal Access to Justice

Every person deserves access to legal representation, regardless of their income, background, or zip code. Yet, essential legal services and constitutional rights are increasingly at risk due to federal cuts and executive actions. That's why the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) is launching JustFundIt—a national campaign dedicated to protecting and expanding federal funding for civil legal aid and public defense.

JustFundIt Areas of Focus

Due Process

Due process ensures everyone has fair access to their legal rights, including civil and criminal matters. Civil legal aid and public defense attorneys educate communities, advocate for stronger policies, and represent those who cannot afford legal counsel. Federal funding is critical to making justice accessible regardless of income.

Housing

Without stable housing, work, school, health, and safety become uncertain, increasing the likelihood of contact with the legal system. JustFundIt prioritizes housing based on the proven Housing First model, recognizing it as crucial for safe, thriving communities. Legal aid lawyers and public defenders fight evictions and convictions to keep families in their homes.

Medicaid and Public Benefits

Medicaid provides health coverage for millions who otherwise can't afford care, and food and cash assistance programs ensure access to a vital safety net for low income families. Civil legal aid attorneys help individuals secure and retain these crucial benefits. Continued federal funding ensures these services remain available and accessible.

Education

Education impacts long-term opportunities. Civil legal aid attorneys and public defenders support students facing barriers such as discipline issues, juvenile delinquency matters, disability discrimination, or denial of services. Youth defenders are essential in dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. Federal funding supports education programs and the legal assistance students require to protect their rights.
