Position Description: 

Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is a large, high-volume legal aid organization in Virginia, with 45+ attorneys spanning seven offices. We help thousands of clients each year in civil legal matters, while cultivating relationships with community service organizations, local law firms, pro bono attorneys, and local bar associations, and other stakeholders to serve the region’s low-income and neediest populations.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is currently seeking a full-time Pro Bono & Veterans Law Paralegal to join our dedicated team.

This full-time paralegal position provides support for both the LSNV Pro Bono team and the Veterans Law Pro Bono Project, including clinic administration, case management, client and attorney support, direct legal assistance, community outreach, and advocacy.

This is a hybrid position, preferably based at our Fairfax office.

Essential Functions:

(1) Pro Bono Team Support
Provides paralegal and administrative support for Pro Bono clinics.
Coordinates attorney scheduling and coverage with the Northern Virginia Pro Bono Law Center, as needed.
Monitors the status of appointments between clients and pro bono attorneys and ensures attorneys have necessary materials.
Maintains accurate and detailed records in the case management system to support data reporting requirements.
Coordinates Language Access Program requests for pro bono attorneys.
Monitors and maintains shared program email inboxes and routes communications for appropriate distribution.
Facilitates communication between pro bono attorneys and clients.
Communicates with pro bono attorneys to collect information on case outcomes.

(2) Veterans Law Pro Bono Project Support
Conducts client intake and interviews, performs relevant legal research, and assembles evidence.
Researches veteran applicant outreach options and contacts veteran community service organizations to develop outreach opportunities.
Markets the Veterans Law Pro Bono Project to potential applicants and pro bono volunteers and assists with the creation of promotional materials.
Develops schedules for outreach events, trainings, and legal clinics.
Coordinates interviews, processes applicant financial intakes, and schedules follow-up appointments with staff and/or pro bono attorneys.
Organizes and maintains client files, including detailed documentation of activities.

(3) Miscellaneous
Implements applicable Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations to ensure compliance.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel: Local travel may be required.

Requirements: 

The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated commitment to public interest work and a strong desire to assist indigent applicants. Further, the ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's or Paralegal degree or comparable education (law school course work or law degree) and/or comparable work experience.
Ability to use office technologies, including case management software.
Strong interviewing and client counseling skills.
Strong public speaking skills.
Ability to balance administrative and client advocacy responsibilities.
Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively on group projects.
Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Knowledge of veterans’ benefits law and/or experience with veterans and military families.
Prior experience managing independent projects or assignments.
Military service or related-military background, including status as a military dependent, preferred.

Salary range: 
The salary ranges from $47,000 to $60,250 based on years of experience and the legal aid pay scale.
