Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP), a statewide nonprofit law firm, seeks a highly skilled and experienced attorney to serve as Family Law Unit Director to manage the statewide GLSP Family Law Unit. The Unit Director is a member of GLSP’s Senior Leadership Team.
GLSP’s family law unit is a statewide leader in advocacy addressing, among other things, systemic issues on behalf of domestic violence victims; divorce; stalking; and securing legal structures and benefits for family or others caring for children, The Unit has a broad focus, working with other Units within GLSP, and outside partners, to help ensure that clients have the safety, stability, and financial independence to move forward with their lives.

GLSP runs 10 regional offices that serve Georgians with low incomes living outside metro Atlanta in 154 of the state’s 159 counties. GLSP employs approximately 182 full-time staff members. We provide free legal aid across a wide range of civil issues, including family law, housing, access to public benefits, eviction prevention, farmworkers' rights, and educational access.
Job Summary
Location and Supervision:
The Unit Director will be part of the Atlanta Central office, but the candidate can be located anywhere in Georgia. Dependent on the candidate’s location, the position can work in any GLSP office and may be a hybrid (3 days in-office and 2 days remote) or fully remote position. The successful candidate will begin their role with a six-month probationary period, with no regularly scheduled remote work until the fourth month or later. The Unit Director will be supervised by the Senior or Deputy Director of Litigation and Advocacy.
Primary Responsibilities:
· The Unit Director will supervise GLSP advocates on family law and kinship care matters and support delivery of quality representation in all 10 GLSP offices. The Unit Director will provide
mentorship to attorneys working on family law cases. The Unit Director may be asked to provide support to pro bono volunteers on family law or kinship care cases placed by GLSP’s Pro Bono Unit. In consultation with the Senior Director of Litigation and Advocacy, the Unit Director will approve novel or complex family law cases to file in court and co-counsel on them. The Unit Director will work with the Senior or Deputy Director of Litigation and Advocacy on potential family law appeals and co-counsel on family law appellate cases.
· The Unit Director will be responsible for remaining current on law, regulations, and other developments related to relevant subject matters and providing training for GLSP advocates, community partners, and client communities. The Unit Director will be responsible for identifying emerging and systemic legal issues and developing legal strategies to address those issues. The Unit Director will be responsible for maintaining current laws and information on the subject area sites on GLSP’s SharePoint site.
· The Unit Director must be knowledgeable about Legal Services Corporation regulations, guidance, and related laws; GLSP policies; relevant law, regulations, and guidance on specific grants; and the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct. The Unit Director will work to ensure compliance in cases and projects when they work with GLSP staff.
· The Unit Director will provide high quality civil legal services for their clients. The Unit Director will handle a limited caseload.
· The Unit Director will serve on relevant internal and external commissions, committees, and task forces as assigned.
· The Unit Director will direct and manage GLSP’s grant-funded projects within the Unit’s portfolio, including the State Domestic Violence Grant Project, the Kinship Care Project, the Department of Justice Rural Grant Project, the Department of Justice Legal Assistance to Victims and the VOCA Grant projects.
· The Unit Director will directly supervise the State Domestic Violence Divorce Hotline Attorney and the Kinship Care Paralegal. As needed, the Unit Director may supervise legal interns or other staff.
Qualifications:
· Graduate of an accredited law school and current member of the Georgia Bar.
· The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong people skills and the ability to effectively manage the needs of both clients and staff.
· They must have a passion for justice for persons with low income. They must be able to think creatively, plan strategically, and maximize available resources.
· The candidate should have experience representing clients in family law cases before Georgia superior courts.
· The candidate should be well organized and able to balance competing priorities.
· The candidate should have strong team and collaborative skills. The candidate should be able to work on teams with attorneys, paralegals, and law students.
Additional qualifications:
· Relevant experience of at least five years of practice as an attorney handling cases in Georgia’s administrative and judicial forums including appellate courts. Representation of persons with low incomes is preferred. Experience advocating for clients with the Georgia Department of Human Services is preferred.
· Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills.
· Experience serving a diverse client population and staff is desired.
· Must provide own transportation for all GLSP work.
· Computer literacy, which includes familiarity using email, Excel, Word, SharePoint, LegalServer, and other computer programs.
· Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
· Some travel is required, including occasional overnight travel. Some evening and weekend work is required.

· Salary range $82,400 - $133,90 dependent upon experience and qualifications.
