Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is a large, high-volume legal aid organization in Virginia, with 45+ attorneys spanning seven offices. We help thousands of clients each year in civil legal matters, while cultivating relationships with community service organizations, local law firms, pro bono attorneys, and local bar associations, and other stakeholders to serve the region’s low-income and neediest populations.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is seeking a full-time Family Law Staff Attorney to join our dedicated team.

This full-time attorney position represents victims of crime (particularly survivors of domestic violence) in various civil cases and focuses on protective orders, family law matters, and other civil cases arising out of victimization. The attorney will also focus on recruiting, training, and mentoring pro bono volunteers and will engage in outreach and education for underserved communities.

This is a hybrid position which is based in our Prince William office, with occasional evening and weekend commitments outside of regular business hours.

Essential Functions:

Maintains a full and diverse caseload.
Represents clients for both emergency and ongoing litigation, as appropriate.
Interacts with clients in a clear, respectful, trauma-informed manner.
Maintains general knowledge of family law.
Keeps up to date on professional materials and other communications related to the job.
Assists in developing and participating in legal outreach and community legal education.
Focuses outreach on underserved communities of survivors of domestic violence.
Participates in LSNV and external trainings, and provides training internally and externally, as appropriate.
Maintains case files and necessary statistical information and participates in supervision consistent with LSNV policies.
Supervises the work of paralegals and/or law students, as directed by management.
Assists Managing Attorney in maintaining relationships with the local Bar and community.
Develops relationships with other community partners.
Supports organizational efforts to recruit, train, and mentor pro bono volunteers.
Cooperates with other LSNV staff and leadership to foster a collaborative and team environment.
Attends office and other program meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel: Local travel may be required.

Requirements: 

Must be licensed with the Virginia State Bar, or have two years of practice in another state (LAC Rule 1A:9).
Interest in gaining litigation experience, required.
Interest in working with survivors of domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault as well as clients of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, and individuals with disabilities.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to social justice, racial justice, and/or public interest work, strongly preferred.
Experience in community engagement and advocacy, strongly preferred.
Strong litigation experience, preferred.
Legal aid experience, strongly preferred.
Multi-lingual (verbal and written), preferred.

Salary range: 
The salary ranges from $72,000 to $104,000 based on years of experience and the legal aid pay scale.
