Join Michigan’s State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) as an Intake Coordinator. The Intake Coordinator manages the case intake process for people entitled to resentencing under the Michigan Supreme Court decision in Czarnecki and Taylor and supports the independent assignment of quality counsel for people at resentencing and for felony appeals throughout the state. The position pays from $60,134 to $86,777, depending on experience.
This is a full-time, limited-term position with state funding allocated through September 30, 2026. Continuation of this position beyond that date is contingent on future budget allocations from the State Legislature. The position is located in Detroit or Lansing.
Job Responsibilities
· Reviews appellate counsel appointment orders to ensure accuracy.
· Serves signed orders of appointment to clients and e-files in the Court of Appeals.
· Interacts and corresponds with public defenders, roster attorneys, and trial court staff.
· Operates the web-based assignment system.
· Manages the intake process for new cases. Requests, receives, reviews, and enters all relevant information into the case management system. Ensures timely receipt of case records, such as the court file and transcripts.
· Analyzes new cases for appropriate categorization to identify conflicts and to prioritize those requiring immediate attention.
· Tracks and monitors case status from assignment to case closing.
· Prepares and files procedural motions as requested.
· Responds to inquiries from courts, trial attorneys, clients, and internal staff regarding the status of cases.
· Serves as a case management software system administrator. Maintains data integrity in SADO’s case management system. Writes queries and reports. Assists in the development and maintenance of case management systems
Qualifications
· Possession of an associate’s degree in paralegal studies, paralegal certification, or a degree in related field, plus three or more years of experience in a law office, court or other legal setting. Two years of relevant experience may be substituted for the required education.
· Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and general office equipment.
· Technical aptitude and ability to understand relational databases. Knowledge of LegalServer and MS Access preferred.
· Detail-oriented and accurate.
· Strong communication skills.
· Organized and proactive, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
· Ability to plan, problem-solve, and make creative and thoughtful decisions.
