Position Description: 

This GLSP position will be responsible for supporting GLSP’s education advocacy throughout Georgia. The Statewide Education Project is a specialized work group providing services throughout GLSP’s 154 county service area under the supervision of GLSP’s Supervising Attorney of the Statewide Education Project (SEP). The types of legal issues addressed by the SEP attorney change frequently in response to the needs of students and their guardians and the forum in which they appear. The SEP attorney may be located anywhere in Georgia with possibility after initial 9 months for hybrid work.

Primary Duties:
• Represent students and parents in education cases. Caseload may include school discipline matters--including appeals--Manifestation Determination Reviews, IEP or 504 meetings, due process hearings in the Office of State Administrative Hearings, OCR complaints, school enrollment, and other school-related litigation and non-litigation advocacy.

• Support education advocacy statewide:

o Provide legal support to GLSP and GLSP pro bono attorneys representing children facing education issues including school discipline, IDEA and Section 504 issues, and issues of access to and enrollment in school.

o Develop and maintain legal resources, including guides, templates, and samples, for use by GLSP and GLSP pro bono attorneys.

o Develop and deliver training to GLSP staff regarding education law and practice.

• Investigate, develop, and carry out systemic education advocacy impacting Georgia school children.

o Help to identify, track, and develop strategies to address systemic issues impacting students.

o Develop community education training and train at community education events throughout Georgia.

o Stay current on education law and trends in Georgia and nationally.

• Familiarity with or lived experience in Georgia public schools preferred but not required

• Licensed to practice in GA with at least one year of practice, preferably representing children

• Valid driver’s license and operable vehicle

• Spanish fluency is a plus

Some travel including overnight required. Some evening and weekend work required.

Successful candidate can be in GLSP office locations other than Atlanta but the position

Salary range: 
Salary range is $58,500- $75,000 depending upon years of experience.
