Community Legal Aid (CLA) provides free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA has over 180 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.
CLA seeks a Senior Supervising Attorney (SSA) to join its legal management team and oversee the work of its Western Mass. fair housing team and other assigned advocates who work on eviction and other housing issues. Among other duties, the SSA will supervise the legal work of advocates who raise housing discrimination claims on behalf of tenants filing affirmative cases, defending against evictions, and seeking to access or maintain affordable housing. This supervision will include co-counseling cases, editing pleadings and briefs, preparing attorneys for and observing them in court, and engaging in regular case reviews. The SSA will also supervise non-attorney staff. In addition, the SSA will work with CLA's Managing Attorneys in conducting annual performance reviews of staff, and will assist in writing grant applications and reports.
The candidate should be someone who is committed to developing and coordinating systems to ensure that their team is properly supervised and supported, and that all grant deliverables are met. The candidate should be an independent thinker and have the ability to calmly and thoughtfully oversee a team that works in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment which can often be stressful for advocates.
It is anticipated that the SSA will be based in CLA's Springfield office and work at that location 2-3 days per week, plus another day each week in one of CLA's other Western Mass. offices. Some weeks may require coming to the office more frequently, depending on the needs of staff. The SSA should also anticipate being available to field calls and emails from supervisees outside normal work hours, as needed to meet urgent client needs.
