Central Minnesota Legal Services (CMLS) is seeking a full-time supervising attorney for its St. Cloud office.

BACKGROUND: CMLS is a four-office nonprofit law firm providing free legal representation to low-income clients in 21 counties throughout central Minnesota. CMLS’ mission is to increase access to justice by providing high quality legal services to individuals experiencing poverty, challenging inequities, and empowering community members to participate in our civil legal system. The position will be in the St. Cloud Office and involves some travel throughout the 19 counties in the rural CMLS service area. The St. Cloud office serves a 9-county area. The Willmar office serves a 10-county area.

CMLS has a current budget of $4.2 million. It is funded primarily by the federal Legal Services Corporation, the state of Minnesota, and other grants. CMLS enjoys a good rapport with, and strong support, from the organized bar and the local judiciary. The program has a commitment to service work, including litigation, administrative advocacy, community legal education and outreach, as appropriate to client needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The supervising attorney is responsible for day-to-day supervision of staff in the St. Cloud and Willmar offices, including leading office and file review meetings and ensuring compliance with regulations and policies. The supervising attorney will also handle their own caseload, primarily in family law, and supervise a vibrant Volunteer Attorney Program. The supervising attorney will ensure that required reports are completed timely and work collaboratively with the Executive Director. The program has a commitment to service work, including litigation, administrative advocacy, community legal education and outreach, as appropriate to client needs.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to the problems and needs of low income and vulnerable people. The supervising attorney candidate should have at least five years post-law school poverty law experience; preference for family law experience. Licensed to practice law in Minnesota. Attorneys admitted in another state can get temporary pre-exam admission. Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required. Ability to speak a second language, particularly Spanish or Somali, is a plus.

Demonstrated commitment to furthering principles of inclusion and belonging, and ability to work effectively with people from different backgrounds are essential. We strongly encourage candidates of all identities, experiences, and communities to apply. We welcome information about how your experience can contribute to serving our diverse client community. Must have strong communication skills, ability to work constructively in a team setting, exhibit good judgment, ability to learn quickly and work independently, and be able to effectively handle contested hearings.
