The Alabama Bankruptcy Assistance Project (ABAP) is a joint project of the five Volunteer Lawyer Programs (VLPs) in Alabama (Madison County VLP, Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham, Montgomery VLP, Alabama State Bar VLP, South Alabama VLP). The ABAP Coordinating Attorney will provide bankruptcy assistance services in Chapter 7 bankruptcies to low-income Alabamians, removing barriers to employment and housing, while benefiting the community as a whole.

This position is based in Birmingham and the Coordinating Attorney will be an employee of Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham, but the person in this position will work statewide. The program is guided by an Advisory Council consisting of U.S. Bankruptcy Judges, Chapter 7 Trustees, VLP Directors, and practitioners.

Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham (VLB) is a nonprofit organization that connects low-income residents of Jefferson County with pro bono attorneys who can provide legal advice and representation.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for recruiting and retaining volunteers to participate in ABAP, through the development and implementation of strategies to expand the pool of volunteers accepting pro bono referrals
• Independently facilitates the placement and tracking of eligible cases with volunteers
• Serves as a key liaison to volunteers and provides training and support to volunteers
• Plans and develops volunteer recognition efforts
• Responsible for ABAP program development and delivery of legal services
• Other duties as directed

Salary and Benefits:

• Salary range is $55,000 - $65,000, depending on skills and experience
• Benefits include generous paid time off, health and dental insurance, optional retirement plan, and potential hybrid work schedule

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

• J.D. and admission to practice in Alabama
• Proven project management, organizational, and administrative skills
• Strong networking, interpersonal, and leadership capabilities
• Exceptional communication skills
• Experience with bankruptcy law preferred
• Demonstrated passion for public service and desire to be part of an organization working to increase access to justice
• Willingness to participate in activities, legal assistance clinics, and events held after hours and/or on weekends when necessary
