We partner with low-income and working people to build economic and racial equity. We do this by confronting economic abuse and investing in community wealth. We use an ever-evolving set of legal, economic and advocacy tools to challenge and dismantle unjust systems, building quickly towards a world where all people have what they need to live and thrive.
The Community Economic Defense Project (CEDP) is a Colorado-based nonprofit. Launched in 2020 as the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project, our organization was formed to keep our neighbors housed during the pandemic. Working with clients, we built a deeply integrative approach to eviction, foreclosure, and homelessness prevention that centers the legal and financial needs of housing-insecure families and uses a variety of tools to keep them housed.
Our team now serves more than 1,000 people per month, bringing together housing lawyers, economists, data analysts, policy-experts, organizers, and technologists to serve our clients. We have served more than 50,000 low-income Coloradans across 45 counties, distributing over $200 million in emergency assistance. We have also contributed to the passage of major legislation to prevent eviction, stop economic abuse, and make credit and life-saving medication cheaper.
CEDP’s model has been cited as a best practice by White House, HUD, the Urban Institute, and in the media.
Building on our work to stop evictions, CEDP has further expanded its integrated services model to include disaster response, predatory towing, debt collection, benefit access & navigation, long-term rental assistance, and homelessness response. Similar to CEDP’s work on rental housing, these efforts offer a continuum of care that includes navigation and advisory services, targeted payments, legal support, and the ability to participate in advocacy.
CED Law, the legal arm of CEDP, includes both a tenant legal services team and a homeowner legal services team, and is continuing to expand the services offered to tenants and homeowners in Colorado. We have grown into an important pillar in the housing community by establishing reputation and trust with those we serve. At the same time, foreclosures in Colorado continue to threaten homeowners across Colorado and we see an ever more pressing need to take the offensive on behalf of our clients. We recently brought on board a Supervising Attorney to focus on building out an affirmative homeowner litigation docket. We are now seeking an additional attorney with litigation experience to help with the growth and development of this affirmative practice.
In this role you will bring affirmative litigation on behalf of low-and-moderate income homeowners and mobile homeowners. Representative matters may relate to abusive lending practices, mortgage servicing errors, sales of defective mobile homes, exploitative mobile home park owner practices, title disputes, HOAs, and other topics. Clients may include individuals or classes of individuals who have experienced substantially the same harms. This practice is expected to stem directly from CED Law’s defensive work, as we seek to vindicate rights of low-and-moderate-income homeowners’ to prevent loss of property from foreclosure, mobile home lot eviction, and replevin actions. Cases may be litigated using state and/or federal consumer protection law, real property law, Colorado’s Mobile Home Park Act, and other statutes as appropriate
You will work as part of a team to successfully litigate claims in state and/or federal court through all stages of litigation, from complaint through resolution. This may include motion practice, fact and/or expert discovery, depositions, and trial, as well as mediation and/or informal settlement negotiation. You will also set and complete case goals identified by supervisors and/or in partnership with supervisors, meet for weekly check-ins with direct supervisor and for All Firm meetings with the entire law firm staff, coordinate across CEDP to ensure timely tracking and reporting of case completions. Additionally, you will attend hearings, court appearances, and conferences based on case requirements, interact with and present to partners across the organization to serve clients efficiently and effectively, prepare and present on homeowner and mobile homeowners’ rights to groups of clients, partners across the organization, and partner organizations across the state. You will be responsible for completing required documentation for both case tracking and personal management and may be asked to fulfill other duties as required.
