Position Summary

This position independently provides advanced paralegal support in complex civil litigation in the Public Protection Unit. This position gathers facts from a variety of sources to draft interrogatories, affidavits, and other related legal documents; and assists assistant attorneys general during hearings and trials. The majority of the cases assigned are of considerable size and complexity, involve a large volume of monitoring, particularly compliance with injunctions, and multiple legal issues. Most of the cases involve enforcement and forfeiture actions to state statutes and rules.

Salary Information

The Paralegal - Advanced .80 FTE (32-hours/week) position is in pay schedule 07 and pay range 03. The starting pay will be between $31.00 - $40.00/hour. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Job Details

This position may be eligible to work remotely up to 2-days per week as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.

High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

Occasional in-state travel may be required.  Must be eligible to drive when required for travel.

The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

Qualifications

Providing professional paralegal assistance and support to multiple attorneys.
Managing multiple tasks and prioritizing competing deadlines.
Providing general office support and completing legal support tasks (i.e., proofreading documents, organizing documents, filing and record-keeping, cite-checking, structuring briefs/pleadings, filing documents with the courts, and calendar management, etc.).
Drafting legal documents (i.e., pleadings, affidavits, findings of fact, discovery requests and responses, etc.).
Working with Adobe Acrobat or case management software (e.g. Time Matters) and common office technology programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or comparable software).

In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will also have a combination of education, training, and/or experience:

Supporting attorneys at trial (i.e., set-up of trial equipment, coordinate with witnesses, preparing and organizing exhibits, etc.).
Working with e-discovery and managing complex litigation, as a paralegal.
Working within a government agency or public sector setting.
