Bar Counsel

Organization: Board of Bar Overseers of the Supreme Court
Location: Boston, MA
Type/Industry: Legal/Legal Services

ABOUT: BOARD OF BAR OVERSEERS OF THE SUPREME COURT

Established by the Supreme Judicial Court (the “Court”) in 1974, the Board of Bar Overseers (“BBO”) serves as the independent administrative and regulatory body that oversees attorney registrations to the bar, adjudicates allegations of misconduct, as well as petitions for reinstatement to the bar, and recommends disciplinary sanctions to the Court. The BBO includes an Office of General Counsel (“OGC”), Office of Bar Counsel (“OBC”), and Registration department, and provides staff and administrative support to the Clients’ Security Board (“CSB”) and the Court’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being.

Though the BBO is part of the judicial branch of government and is subject to the general supervision of the Court, its operations are funded from annual registration fees paid by members of the Massachusetts bar, and not public funds. Registration fees also support related entities including the CSB and a lawyer assistance program, which are not part of the BBO.

The BBO is governed by a twelve-member board (the “Board”), eight of whom are members of the Massachusetts bar and four of whom are public (non-attorney) members. All members are appointed by the Court and serve voluntarily, without compensation, for staggered four-year terms. The Board provides governance for all BBO functions.

The Bar Counsel will support the BBO’s mission to protect the public from unethical conduct by attorneys and to preserve and enhance the integrity of the bar. The salary range for this position is $180,000-$203,000 annually.
