AppalReD Legal Aid is seeking a skilled and experienced attorney for the position of Directing Attorney in its Hazard Office. For over 50 years, this well-established legal services program has been serving low-income and other vulnerable clients in a 37-county area, which includes the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky and rolling hills of south-central Kentucky. AppalReD Legal Aid operates a network of 6 field offices with a staff of 28 attorneys, 5 paralegals, and supporting personnel.
AppalReD Legal Aid’s mission is to promote equal access to justice, to encourage self-sufficiency, to empower and improve the lives of low income and other vulnerable people and families in eastern and south-central Kentucky by providing them high quality legal assistance. AppalReD Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to individuals and families whose incomes are insufficient to retain private legal services to address critical legal matters involving safety from violence, housing and economic stability, consumer, public benefits, expungement, disaster related issues, and matters related to opioid and other substance abuse conditions.
The Directing Attorney will be a part of the program management team and will be expected to:
• Provide direct supervision and management of the office legal and support staff to ensure high quality legal assistance.
• Maintain a caseload consistent with AppalReD Legal Aid’s core priority areas.
• Conduct regular case review meetings to assign cases consistent with AppalReD Legal Aid’s core priority areas.
• Effectively manage, delegate, and communicate with staff.
• Actively participate as a member of AppalReD Legal Aid’s management team and provide updates on local office casework, events, activities and accomplishments.
• Ensure compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, as well as requirements of other grants and contracts.
• Lead the office’s community engagement efforts including building and sustaining relationships with client community members, community partners and other stakeholders interested in furthering AppalReD Legal Aid’s mission.
• Actively participate in in the legal profession in Kentucky, including ongoing training to further legal education, improve skills, and to remain current on developments in the law.
A successful applicant must:
• Be licensed to practice law in Kentucky or be eligible for admission without examination or for limited admission.
• Possess excellent legal, administrative, leadership, and communication skills.
• Have experience working in and supporting a team environment.
• Have a demonstrated commitment to serving the legal needs of low-income people.
• Be interested in the problems of Appalachia and manifest a willingness to work in rural communities.
• Have the ability to inspire others.
• Understand the importance of building a welcoming and inclusive environment for clients and staff members.
• Set an example of professionalism at all times.
The compensation package includes salary of $61,703 to $90,687 per year plus benefits depending on experience. AppalReD Legal Aid has an excellent benefit package which includes participation in a state pension plan, generous leave provisions, including paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
