The Office of the Appellate Defender has an opening for a full-time appellate defender. This attorney will provide zealous and creative representation for indigent clients with criminal, delinquency, and child welfare cases before the Vermont Supreme Court and occasionally in the federal courts. This attorney will also represent clients in post-conviction relief matters in civil court, the Vermont Supreme Court and federal court. In addition to client representation, this attorney will advise and assist trial attorneys with issue identification, motion practice and interlocutory appeals, as well as develop and conduct trainings for trial attorneys. The Appellate Defenders are busy, client-centered, and committed to producing excellent work and achieving great results.
This is an exempt, full-time position located in Montpelier, Vermont. Salary will be based upon qualifications and experience and will follow the Office of the Defender General Pay Plan Addendum.
The successful candidate must be similarly motivated and have top-notch writing and research skills and post-bar experience in appellate criminal or juvenile defense or in appellate representation of parents or children in child welfare cases. Experience as a trial attorney is also desirable. Applicants must be a current member in good standing of the Vermont bar or eligible to obtain admission by waiver by the start date.
