The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the nation’s leading national racial justice legal organizations. Formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy, the Lawyers’ Committee uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (“Lawyers’ Committee”), one of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations based in Washington D.C., seeks a collaborative, detail-oriented, and highly organized individual to serve as a Confidential Assistant to the Chief Counsel and the Deputy Chief Counsels. The Chief Counsel, with the assistance of the Deputy Chief Counsels, oversees the Lawyers’ Committee’s legal units, which include six subject matter areas in addition to the General Legal Project and a staff of around forty.  

The Assistant will provide support to the Chief Counsel and the Deputy Chief Counsels in several aspects of their work. The position works under the supervision of the Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsels.  

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Washington, DC. The Confidential Assistant to Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsels will work under the supervision of the Chief Counsel.  

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential responsibilities of the Assistant to the Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsels include but are not limited to the following: 

Prepares compiles, edits, and/or proofs internal and external reports, including weekly reports and Board Books;
Aids in the planning, organization, and coordination of internal and external events, conferences, convenings, and meetings;
Provides general administrative support, including arranging travel and accommodations, assisting in the preparation of expense reports, and scheduling meetings;
Manages listservs, collaborative documents, and meeting agendas and minutes; 
Maintains confidential labor relations information on behalf of management regarding union negotiations, including organizing files and materials, preparing notebooks, and circulating materials among the management negotiating team and outside labor counsel;
Supports management team in the development and tracking of proposals and counter-proposals in the bargaining process;
Following the implementation of a collective bargaining agreement provides coordination and support to the Chief Counsel and Deputy Chief Counsels in the handling of and response to any grievances within the legal units;
Serves on development and implementation teams regarding office technology used by the legal units;
Provides limited general litigation support in discrete matters, including formatting and preparing legal documents for filings and maintaining files of litigation matters;
Assists in researching, identifying, and coordinating with potential outside services consultants and/or vendors, as requested;
Researches topics and issues relevant to the substantive work of the organization as requested;
Takes detailed notes during meetings.
   

Requirements: 

Minimum Requirements and Competencies:

Bachelor’s degree or two or more years of work experience as a confidential assistant, program assistant, legal assistant, or program coordinator;
Commitment to civil rights and racial justice;
Excellent organization, oral and written communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
Facility with the technology used by legal organizations, including mastery of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
Experience working in diverse environments;
Strong attention to detail, including outstanding proofreading skills;
Self-starter that can effectively multitask and;
Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
