The selected candidate will have significant responsibilities for teaching and curriculum planning in Public Defense Education programs, including the Misdemeanor Defender School, New Felony Defender School, and Annual Public Defender Conference. The selected candidate also will teach in programs for magistrates and district and superior court judges, including orientation programs, biannual conferences, and Judicial College courses.
Advising. The selected candidate will advise public defenders, court-appointed counsel, and judicial officials regarding criminal law and procedure and evidentiary issues.
Scholarship. The selected candidate will produce scholarship in the areas of criminal law and procedure and evidence. This may include manual chapters, articles, and legal references. The position also will be expected to contribute to the North Carolina Criminal Law Blog, a resource for practitioners as well as an outlet for scholarly research.
J.D., excellent writing skills, strong academic performance, and a demonstrated commitment to public service required.
Three or more years of legal experience working with the North Carolina court system on criminal law issues.
