Mission Statement. LASMNY is a 501 (3) (c) non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide free legal assistance to low-income people facing civil, legal problems that have a profound impact on the basic needs of life. Through legal advice, emergency legal services and representation, LASMNY helps its clients with the following issues: stabilize their finances, protect themselves and their children from Domestic Violence (DV), obtain access to health care, avoid homelessness as a result of wrongful evictions, protects homes from foreclosure and targets specific, vulnerable populations with our services such as senior citizens, victims of domestic violence (DV), people with disabilities, refugees and immigrants, and veterans.
LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, our Farmworker Law Project (FLP) services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office.

The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY), Inc. is actively seeking a dynamic full-time Managing Attorney to manage the day-to-day activities and supervision of LASMNY’s Oneonta office. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Essential Job Functions
• Provide supervision and professional development opportunities to staff attorneys, paralegals, and support staff and to other employees under his/her supervision;
• Independently manage a caseload, including full litigation of assigned cases;
• Supervise the legal work and conduct regular case reviews with case handlers;
• Assist in the recruitment and selection of employees;
• Serve as a signatory on checks and ensure the fiscal integrity of the LASMNY’s funds;
• Work with community and bar groups as necessary;
• Assist in employee relation matters;
• Assist in fiscal matters, including budget development and grant management;
• Comply and ensure that all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and LASMNY policies, procedures and grant based reporting requirements are met;
• Member of the Executive Team;
• Perform reasonable and related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Qualifications
• Must be licensed to practice law in New York State;
• Must have a minimum of five years of legal experience, with substantive experience in legal issues affecting low-income clients;
• Demonstrated commitment and experience in mentoring and training less-experienced attorneys;
• Excellent oral and written communications skills are required;
• Must possess strong leadership skills and have a demonstrated ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize projects;
• Proficient with Microsoft Office or related software and computerized legal research;
• Bilingual or multilingual a plus;
• Travel is required.

A commitment to professional growth, excellent organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for direct client services and commitment to social justice required. Other qualifying factors include: the nature and extent of prior legal experience, knowledge and understanding of the legal problems and needs of the poor, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid the poor, ability to communicate with persons in the client community; and cultural similarity with the client community. Bilingual or multilingual a plus.

Salary
Admitted to the NYS Bar: Estimated Salary Range: $67,350 to $90,540. Depends on Experience.
