The Defender Association of Philadelphia seeks an experienced attorney to become a leader in our Major Trial Unit as Assistant Chief. The Assistant Chief is responsible for assisting the Chief in the day to day management and operation of all aspects of the Unit. The Assistant Chief will help implement the Major Trial Unit’s vision of best practices for legal representation for Major Trials, SMART rooms, the Jury Demand Program, and any other assignments housed within the Major Trial Unit. The Assistant Chief will assist in providing direct supervision and support to all of the Major Trial Unit staff. The Assistant Chief will provide hands-on supervision and training to attorneys in the Jury Demand program. The Assistant Chief must understand the roles and responsibilities of all staff and be able to identify staffing needs and manage resources. The role will foster a work environment that is conducive to the teamwork approach.

• Juris Doctorate Degree required; Admission to PA Bar and be in good standing with ABA
• 5 years of public defender or criminal defense experience, preferred
• Jury trial experience required
• Experience managing attorneys, establishing teams & facilitating goals and accomplishments utilizing a collaborative and inclusive approach is preferred
• Must possess the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, including the FJD and other stakeholders, and perform public speaking and public relations engagements as needed
• Be able to travel to local courtrooms and other community placements
• Requires full Covid vaccination or approval exemption request
