The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking an experienced lawyer to lead its Civil Rights Bureau located in the New York City office. The Bureau enforces federal, state, and local laws that protect New Yorkers from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, military status, source of income, or disability. The Bureau investigates and civilly prosecutes alleged patterns of unlawful discrimination in a variety of arenas, including employment, housing, education, criminal justice, voting, lending, and places of public accommodation. Some of the more recent matters handled by the Bureau targeted the following areas: access to education; equal employment opportunities and sexual harassment in the workplace; fair housing; fair lending and access to credit; immigrant rights; police misconduct; access by individuals with disabilities; the rights of the LGBTQ community; language access; religious rights; reproductive rights; and voting rights.

The Bureau’s docket reflects its commitment to combating discrimination and its effects, ensuring equality of opportunity, and promoting inclusion across New York State. In addition to litigation, the Bureau engages in significant community outreach and public education and other advocacy efforts.

Requirements: 

We are seeking a candidate with at least ten (10) years of complex civil litigation experience, preferably with a focus on civil rights. The candidate must also possess excellent organizational, interpersonal communication, legal writing and editing, oral advocacy, and teamwork skills. Experience in some or all of the following areas is preferred but not required: supervision of other lawyers; background or interest in housing discrimination, criminal justice or other civil rights cases; and development and management of complex investigations or impact litigation.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

The salary for this position is $183,927 + $3,026 in location pay.
