Position Description:

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.

Position Description: Our Homeless Veterans Project represents individual veterans in complex VA disability benefits and military discharge upgrade matters. Many of our clients have significant mental health disabilities due to trauma such as combat and military sexual violence. These cases require significant attorney involvement so that the veterans we represent can receive the compensation and other benefits they earned through their service to our country.

We seek a talented full-time Staff Attorney with 0-8 years of experience to provide free legal services to help unhoused veterans with disabilities gain access to critical income-support benefits. The attorney will practice in three areas designed to remove barriers to housing stability: VA benefits, discharge upgrades, and traffic tickets. The attorney will carry a full caseload of clients, from the initial interview through the administrative and/or judicial process. The attorney will also work as part of a team and share responsibilities related to the program, such as creating and leading trainings and identifying systematic problems within the VA benefits application process and developing strategies to resolve them. This may include working directly with staff and leadership at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The attorney will represent unhoused veterans living in Los Angeles. Depending on client needs and the applicant’s skill sets and interests, the attorney may focus on serving post-9/11 veterans, chronically unhoused veterans living on Skid Row, and/or women veterans through our medical legal partnership at the Long Beach VA. The attorney will need to be familiar with trauma-informed and client-centered interviewing frameworks. The attorney will be called on to assume additional responsibilities as needed.

Compensation: Salary range is $75,000-$92,250. Excellent benefits.

ICLC is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to their race, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, age, disability, marital status, or medical condition. All qualified applicants with criminal histories shall be considered in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring.

Requirements:

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills. Strong teaching and public speaking skills. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client- centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet deadlines. Experience in developing and leading trainings. Experience working with veterans, people with disabilities, and/or people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Access to reliable transportation. Membership in a State Bar is required.
