Position Description: 

STAFF ATTORNEY – DOMESTIC RELATIONS
ALBANY, NY OFFICE

Responsibilities:
An assertive and compassionate attorney is needed to provide high quality culturally competent civil legal services to victims of domestic violence and/or crime, especially to low-income, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTGNC) Persons of Color (POC) victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in the Albany, New York Legal Aid office. The attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education, and representation to low-income and LGBTQGNC POC victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in a broad range of civil matters including orders of protection, custody, matrimonial law, and child support. Responsible for implementation, recordkeeping, and reporting for the assigned grant(s). The attorney will be expected to work closely with In our Own Voices (IOOV) in Albany, Columbia, Green, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady, and actively participate in domestic violence task forces.

Qualifications:
At least 2 to 10 years prior legal experience or equivalent is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high-quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Sensitive and effective management of a robust litigation caseload involving sensitive and traumatic circumstances. Must be assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently. Must work well both independently and with close supervision. Must have a car and a valid New York driver’s license. Excellent computer, research, and writing skills. Prior experience in the high-quality representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in Family Court or relevant experience. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm that provides free civil legal services to low-income and needy individuals. This position is in our main office in Albany, New York.

Salary: $54,439 - $73,297 DOE Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits.
