Position Description: 

As a result of funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), an Eviction Prevention Managing Attorney and Project Coordinator position been created at Pine Tree Legal Assistance. This is a managing attorney position. The managing attorney should have a minimum of six years of legal services experience, including eviction defense and rental housing law. The position will be based out of the Portland or Lewiston offices of Pine Tree Legal Assistance. This unique managing attorney position will blend direct client representation with the role of project coordinator that includes ongoing training and support of eviction defense staff and oversight of high-quality delivery of services statewide with a goal of maximizing coverage, identifying systemic issues and barriers to justice for Maine’s tenants and working with staff statewide to advance strategies to overcome those barriers.

The attorney will be expected to provide occasional coverage for eviction cases in other areas of Maine on an ‘as needed’ basis to help meet the goal of statewide eviction defense. The attorney will work closely with other managing attorneys and eviction prevention staff to meet grant expectations and maximize impact. The managing attorney will take an active role in supporting Pine Tree’s statewide Housing Practice Group.

This position is currently funded through July 2024 under a contract with HUD. It is supervised by Pine Tree’s Deputy Director. Frequent travel related to work activities (including trainings) is required and some evening or weekend time may also be required to attend trainings, meetings, or outreach activities. The position will involve some client or staff meetings at locations outside the office, as well as travel to other courts and offices of partner agencies as appropriate to provide coordination and low-barrier legal representation.
