Position Description:

Pine Tree Legal Assistance has an immediate opening for a unique and exciting staff attorney position within the pro bono program. The pro bono staff attorney is an essential member of a three-person team tasked with recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers who provide legal assistance to Pine Tree clients in priority areas of law. The pro bono staff attorney role offers a great opportunity for new or experienced practitioners to engage in litigation, training, networking within the legal community, and outreach to low-income communities throughout Maine.

The pro bono staff attorney reports to the director of pro bono services, Shannon Karam, and the paralegal in the pro bono program, Mary Murphy.

Pine Tree has relied for decades on the support of skilled and dedicated volunteers to help expand access to justice to individuals around the State. Pine Tree provides pro bono case referrals in a wide range of housing and consumer matters, IRS disputes, veterans’ estate planning cases, representation of students in school disciplinary proceedings, and more. Pine Tree volunteers handled nearly 190 pro bono cases in 2021 and the number is expected to increase to more than 200 cases in 2022. Pine Tree also maintains robust student internship and externship programs during the summer and academic year. The pro bono unit works with Pine Tree staff, volunteers, community stakeholders, bar associations, law firms, colleges, and law schools throughout Maine to increase Pine Tree’s capacity to provide exceptional legal services to the community. The pro bono staff attorney will provide support in all of these efforts.

The position is based in Pine Tree’s Portland office, although some time may be spent at other locations. Travel to attend court, meetings, events, and statewide trainings should be expected. The full job description is available on request.
