This Capital Habeas Unit provides zealous representation to indigent prisoners on Alabama’s Death Row in their federal habeas proceedings and subsequent litigation. If you are interested in working on the front lines of the battle for social justice, this is the place for you. The CHU is seeking an applicant who has empathy, humility, and passion, along with excellent written and oral advocacy skills, the ability to work as a member of a defense team, good organizational skills, proficiency in computer-based research, and the ability to task-prioritize. While capital habeas experience is preferred, the CHU will also consider candidates with related externship experience, clerkships, or prior law practice. Some work with volunteer state counsel and with the Trial Unit of this office will be expected.
The CHU attorney’s responsibilities include: managing cases at various stages of post-conviction review; writing briefs, motions, and other pleadings; reviewing voluminous trial and appellate records; developing claims and litigation strategy; advocating at evidentiary hearings and oral arguments; working as a member of a case team; conducting case-related investigation; meeting with clients, experts, witnesses, and family members; handling initial and other appearances as part of a duty day schedule; and other duties as required. Some overnight travel is required. Applicants must be a member in good standing of a State Bar by the initial hire date and have a driver’s license and appropriate motor vehicle insurance. Attorneys in this office may not engage in private law practice. Salary depends on experience and is comparable to salaries provided to positions in the Office of the U.S. Attorneys.
