Position Description:

Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income and elderly residents of central and western Mass. CLA has over 140 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.

CLA seeks an advocate for a six-month period who will help coordinate our medical-legal partnership with UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester while another employee is on parental leave. Clinicians will refer patients to the program who need help with legal issues involving homelessness prevention, income and health insurance maximization, humanitarian-based immigration relief, domestic relations, special education, and guardianship. The advocate will oversee the administration of the project and will hold regular intake hours at primary care clinical sites; help train, recruit, and support private volunteer attorneys who will accept pro bono referrals; participate in leadership team and project evaluation meetings with clinical partners; and serve as a liaison between the legal and clinical project partners. If the successful candidate is a licensed attorney, they will also handle a varied caseload. The position includes grant-reporting and administrative duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: Attorney and non-attorney candidates are eligible to apply. Candidates must be highly organized and have excellent oral and written communication skills, including versatility in communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders. Experience in developing, administering and/or working as an advocate in a medical-legal partnership or other collaborative setting strongly preferred, as are strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with corporate and institutional partners. Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, preferred.

COMPENSATION: Salary DOE, including whether the candidate is a licensed attorney and can provide legal representation to clients. CLA offers a very generous benefits package that includes 401(k) with employer-paid contribution; low-cost health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) for employees and their dependents; malpractice insurance; paid leave (4 weeks vacation, 3 personal days, 12 sick days, and 13 holidays); and relocation stipend.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Please submit cover letter and resume to: Alicia Vaughan, HR Director, Community Legal Aid, 370 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01608, or email [email protected].
