DISABILITY ADVOCACY PROGRAM (DAP) PARALEGAL ALBANY OFFICE
Position -- The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York has a Paralegal position open in the Albany office. The Paralegal will screen clients for services, assist program attorneys in case development, and, under the supervision of an attorney, represent claimants in administrative appeals.
Responsibilities — The DAP Paralegal will do initial client screening of applicants for service to determine program priority cases and relative case merit and assist Albany DAP attorneys in case development and client communications. The DAP Paralegal will work closely with DAP attorneys, area service providers, such as the Department of Social Services, case managers from area social service, housing, and/or mental health services providers, and medical providers to develop evidence to support the client’s disability claim and develop connections with Social Security field offices in the catchment area, as well as the Social Security Administration Albany Office of Hearing Operations to assist clients in their claim for disability benefits. The DAP Paralegal will also be expected to perform various tasks assigned by the Attorney including but not limited to obtaining medical and/or vocational evidence. As the DAP paralegal develops substantive expertise, they will be assigned direct advocacy tasks under the supervision of an attorney.
Qualifications -- Must be intelligent, hard-working, careful, reliable, have good judgment and a demonstrated commitment to the low-income community. Must be sensitive to the needs and difficulties low income and homeless families face. Must be able to write clearly and persuasively. Must have either a BA in the human services field (with a strong preference for additional relevant experience) OR three years or more relevant experience. Must be able to work well as part of a team. Must have a clean and valid NYS drivers license and vehicle. Prior experience in Social Security disability issues is a plus. Good computer skills. Spanish speaking a plus.
Salary: $29,571 -- $40,160 DOE. Excellent fringe benefits.
