Position Description: 

Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) is a large, high-volume legal aid organization in Virginia, with 45+ attorneys working out of 7 offices. We help thousands of disadvantaged clients each year in civil legal matters, while cultivating relationships with community service organizations, pro bono attorneys, local bar associations, and other stakeholders to serve the region’s low-income and neediest populations.

Job Summary: This is a full-time leadership role that assists the Executive Director in ensuring that the organization provides high-quality legal services and advocacy for the region’s low-income, elderly, and disabled individuals and families.

Essential Functions:
• In coordination with the Executive Director and the Deputy Director for Program Services, provides day-to-day management, long-term strategic guidance, and priority setting for the program; Works to ensure that the program takes a leadership role in providing impact advocacy on major issues and employs a wide range of advocacy tools and innovative programs that are the product of rigorous planning, tailored to meet the current and emerging needs of the client community;
• Serves as lead counsel for the program on major cases, and co-counsel and otherwise actively participates in key cases;
• Directly supervises the Chairs of LSNV’s substantive law practice groups;
• Oversees the substantive law and advocacy training and mentoring of all staff;
• Promotes LSNV and its mission by being an active presence in the community, providing community outreach, working with other Legal Aid programs and court systems, as well as the various agencies, committees, and networks that address issues impacting LSNV’s client community;
• Maintains a small case load; and
• Provides additional assistance requested by the Executive Director.

Requirements: 

• JD degree and be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under VA law with at least five (5) years of post-JD, and at least three (3) years legal aid experience;
• Must be licensed by the Virginia State Bar, or have two years of practice in another state (LAC Rule 1A:9);
• High level of management/supervisory experience --
o Significant experience in providing legal advice and policy guidance;
o Ability to develop and implement an organizational vision, which integrates key national and program goals, priorities, values, and other factors;
• Experience establishing and maintaining harmonious relationships with stakeholders, including the public, other nonprofit and legal aid organizations, and local government agencies in LSNV jurisdictions;
• Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
• Ability to make timely and effective decisions and produce results through strategic planning and the implementation and evaluation of programs and policies;
• Ability to explain, advocate and express facts and ideas in a convincing manner, and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally; and
• Experience working on issues of racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a willingness to play a central role in LSNV’s efforts on these issues moving forward.
