Position Description: 

Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho is now accepting applications for a Trial Attorney position based in Yakima, Washington. The primary practice areas will be before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington; the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho; and United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. This organization litigates cases in four locations: Spokane, WA; Richland, WA; Yakima, WA; and Coeur d’Alene, ID.

We are a Community Defender Organization (see 18 U.S.C. § 3006A(g)(2)(B)), making us a non-profit corporation funded by a grant from the federal government. Our employees are considered “at will” and are not government employees. We provide defense services in federal criminal cases, as well as related matters when appointed by the court. Our main office is in Spokane, and we operate a branch office in Yakima.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a trial attorney position. The attorney will be handling criminal cases from inception to trial (and beyond if necessary). The caseload is varied, but includes the following: 1) firearms offenses; 2) drug offenses; 3) immigration offenses; 4) child pornography; 5) white collar offenses; and 6) violent offenses including serious assaults (physical and sexual) and murders occurring on Native American lands. Regular day trips and some overnight travel is required for case investigations, court appearances, and visiting clients housed in various correctional facilities throughout Eastern Washington and Central/North Idaho. Applicants must be technologically savvy, as we are a paper-light office. We store case files electronically, we manage calendars electronically, and we file pleadings electronically. A trial attorney may not engage in the private practice of law.

Requirements: 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess the following license qualifications: 1) be a graduate of an accredited law school; 2) be admitted to practice before the highest court in a state (a Washington bar license is not required); 3) be eligible for admission to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington; and 4) be eligible for admission to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Applicants must possess 3 or more years of professional attorney experience. Spanish fluency is preferred.

Any offer is conditional on the applicant being fully-vaccinated for Covid-19 (along with all CDC-recommended boosters) on or before the hire date. The anticipated start date is Summer 2022, but must be on-board no later than September 16, 2022.

SALARY/BENEFITS: This full-time position has a starting annual salary range of $71,142 to $155,361 which is based on years of professional attorney experience. Benefits include: health/vision/dental; life insurance/AD&D & long-term disability; flexible savings account; 403(b) Retirement Plan; as well as 11 paid federal holidays, 13 days of paid annual sick leave and 13 days of paid annual vacation (the rate of paid vacation leave increases based on years of service). Salary is paid semi-monthly (15 and end of the month) via direct deposit.
