Founded in 1913, the IML is the formal voice for Illinois municipalities, promoting competence and integrity in the administration of local government. Through advocacy at the state and federal level, IML works tirelessly to ensure every local voice is heard. About the Position
The General Counsel is a senior member of the IML executive team responsible for the following:
• Directing the operation of the legal department, conducting occasional educational and training programs and various parts of the annual conference. The Legal Department consists of three employees including two attorneys and one support staff.
• Coordinating the provision of legal advice and services to members ensuring timely, accurate and complete information to local officials and other attorneys.
• Providing assistance to the Executive Director, leading special projects and providing both professional and technical assistance where needed.
• Serving as the staff liaison for the Home Rule Attorneys Committee.
• Analyzing proposed and adopted state legislation, assisting IML lobbyists in the development of League positions.
• Participating in the development of League policies, procedures and programs including writing opinions and briefs on legal matters impacting Illinois municipalities.
• Developing, coordinating, and administering Attorneys Seminars, Newly Elected Officials Seminars and other educational and training programs.
• Serve as a member of the communications team, reviewing and editing articles for appropriate content prior to release.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated starting salary range is competitive along with a comprehensive benefits package including a 401(a) plan with a 9% employer contribution. The IML also offers paid vacation, holidays and sick leave as well as professional development opportunities. The position is based in Springfield. While remote work is not an option, the position does not typically involve evening or weekend work.

Position Requirements
IML is seeking a highly collaborative legal professional interested advocacy work on behalf of Illinois municipalities. Candidates must have knowledge of and experience in Illinois municipal law and familiarity with Illinois state government. In addition:
• Candidates must have a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice, in good standing, in Illinois.
• Candidates must not be permanently prohibited from registering as a lobbyist by the State of Illinois, although the position is not likely to actually lobby.
• Candidates must have a history of collaboration within and outside of their organization, intergovernmental cooperation and relationship building.
• Candidates must possess clear and concise verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present complex information to any audience.
• Candidates must demonstrate a high level of honesty and integrity, recognizing the highly confidential nature of client interactions.
