Position Description:

Court Watch NOLA Internship

About Court Watch NOLA:

Court Watch NOLA uses a community-based participatory data collection program to hold the courts accountable. The daily and visible presence of court watchers' bright yellow clipboards and brightly colored identification cards loudly broadcasts to criminal justice stakeholders that they are being watched and that New Orleanians demand that their courts are accountable, transparent, and just.

Over the past 15 years, Court Watch NOLA has recruited, educated, trained, and supported more than a thousand volunteers in observing and reporting on whether our judges, prosecutors, public defenders, sheriff deputies, police officers, and other criminal justice actors are doing their jobs professionally, transparently, fairly, and economically.

About the Position:

Court Watch interns will monitor criminal court proceedings, record data from the proceedings, and upload the data to the Court Watch NOLA database. This data will be used in preparing Court Watch NOLA reports to the community and court stakeholders. Court Watch interns are not just watching court proceedings, but also are contributing to a large and complex data project. Court Watch interns may be asked to perform associated duties, such as data entry and legal research, to contribute to the project.

Court Watch interns do not need to be in law school or in legal studies.

Court Watch interns are given comprehensive training on the theory and practice of criminal court procedures.

Court sessions are currently online and in-person, and we are accepting interns for both on-site and remote options.

Requirements:

Court Watch Interns will need to perform the following tasks or duties:

Interns will need to consistently monitor weekday morning and afternoon court sessions. Weekend court sessions will be available, but not required.

Interns will need to carefully record qualitative and quantitative data and report on recorded data in written form.
Interns will need to use technology for scheduling observations, tracking hours, uploading data, and potentially more as needed.

Communications skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely in English, are very important.

Discretion and impartiality are important. Court Watch NOLA is non-partisan and impartial in data collection and reporting practices, and is responsible for careful handling of sensitive information.

Interns will need to arrange reliable transportation to the court house if court watching in-person. Public transit is available.
