Position Description:

THE CENTER FOR LAW AND EDUCATION IS HIRING AN EDUCATION ATTORNEY!

The Center for Law and Education (“CLE”), a national non-profit resource, support and advocacy organization committed to improving the quality of education for all students, with a focus on the rights of low-income students, seeks an education attorney for its Boston office. As a member of CLE’s legal team, the attorney will identify and target policies, practices and other barriers that systemically deny equitable educational opportunities to students within protected population groups (race, national origin, ethnicity, language status, disability, sex/gender/sexual preference/gender identity, socioeconomic status) from receiving high-quality, content-rich curricula and instruction provided by qualified teachers and paraprofessionals, including bilingual and culturally competent personnel and service providers such as social workers, mental health counselors, school psychologists, and nurses. In collaboration with legal services field attorneys representing these youth and members of their school communities, the attorney can anticipate using strategies, including administrative advocacy and litigation, that rely upon disparate impact analysis to protect the adversely affected classes of students.

CLE is a national non-profit resource and support organization whose mission is to ensure the right of all students to a high-quality public education, with a primary focus on students from low-income families. Rooted in school reform and civil rights, CLE focuses on bringing the two together to challenge systemic barriers that deny our student clients equal educational opportunities and have an adverse disparate impact on the basis of race, color, national origin, language status, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and/or economic disadvantage.

In Massachusetts, CLE collaborates with legal services and other public interest attorneys, students, their families, educators and community advocates to implement key education programs (Title I, career and technical education, special education), the civil rights statutes (Title VI, Title IX, Equal Educational Opportunity Act, Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act), and state education laws to improve students’ educational outcomes.

3. Basic knowledge and understanding of Title I affecting economically disadvantaged students, special education law, and federal civil rights laws;
4. Strong communication skills;
5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team;

Teaching or other experience working with students, multilingualism, and prior legal experience, particularly as it pertains to education law, litigation and administrative advocacy, are highly desirable.
