APD Job Description
Assistant Public Defenders in the Monroe County Public Defender's Office are expected to provide exceptional representation to members of the Greater Rochester community who cannot afford legal services. Employees are assigned to criminal courts throughout Monroe County and their duties involve investigating and preparing court cases, interviewing clients and related parties, and appearing in court on a regular basis. Assistant Public Defenders will handle negotiations, hearings, trials, pleas, and sentencings. Our office expects that many candidates for the position will not have extensive work histories and provides excellent training throughout a career, and focuses training specifically within the first year of employment.
Organization Description
The Monroe County Public Defender's Office is charged with providing excellent representation to indigent individuals in family and criminal court. MCPD achieves its mission through:

The ideal Assistant Public Defender must be an admitted attorney and possess following qualities:
1. A commitment to providing the highest quality defense to indigent clients;
2. An ability to build relationships with clients and possess clear and effective communication skills;
3. A commitment to racial diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism;
4. A desire to engage in exceptional advocacy;
5. Experience working, or willingness to work, with low-income clients and communities of color; and,
6. An ability to effectively advocate on behalf of their clients with judges, lawyers, court administrators, prosecutors, and others within the criminal justice system.
