Position Description
Do you want to help protect civic freedoms in the Americas? The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is looking for a creative, strategic, and highly motivated lawyer to join our Latin America and the Caribbean team. The Legal Advisor will be based in ICNL’s Washington, DC office. This is a full-time position, with significant travel once the pandemic passes. The Legal Advisor will help design and implement ICNL’s programs across Latin America and the Caribbean.
ICNL promotes the freedoms of association, assembly, and expression and supports civil society, digital rights, and philanthropy in countries around the world, including in diverse Latin American and Caribbean countries. ICNL engages with civil society, governments, legislatures, the Financial Action Task Force and its regional bodies, and the United Nations, including its Special Rapporteurs on the Freedoms of Peaceful Assembly and of Association, among others.
Under the direction of ICNL’s Vice President – Programs, illustrative duties include:
• Implementing programs that support partners’ efforts to improve the laws governing their fundamental rights.
• Drafting legal analyses, briefers, infographics, and other written materials for use by CSOs, government officials, parliamentarians, academics, and the media;
• Developing and implementing grant programs to support partners’ law reform efforts;
• Designing trainings and initiatives to strengthen knowledge of laws affecting the freedoms of association, expression, and assembly as well as partners’ ability to navigate restrictive laws;
• Researching cutting-edge legal issues, such as the nexus between climate change and civic freedoms or the exercise of civic freedoms in the digital age; and
• Engaging in program development.

Requirements: 

Qualifications and requirements:
• Law degree from an accredited school;
• At least 5 years of professional experience in international policy, human rights, or development;
• Demonstrated knowledge of civic space issues in the Americas;
• Excellent research, analytical, writing, and presentation skills;
• Proven ability to engage constructively with civil society, government, and other sectors;
• Experience in program strategy and design as well as project management;
• Fluency in English and Spanish (Portuguese or French is an advantage);
• Willingness to travel extensively;
• Experience in program development/grant writing is an advantage;
• Experience working in challenging political environments, is an advantage; and
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. and willingness to live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
