New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a Domestic Violence Advocacy Project (DVAP) Staff Attorney based in our Berlin, NH office. All applications received by 5:00 PM on Friday, December 31, 2021. will be considered. NHLA expects to conduct video interviews during the week of January 10, 2022. The anticipated start date for the selected candidate is no later than late February 2022.
The DVAP Staff Attorney will provide holistic and trauma-informed representation to victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking who have low income. Representation focuses civil protective orders and divorce and parenting matters, with occasional work on other civil legal needs experienced by victims and survivors. The DVAP Staff Attorney will also be responsible community engagement and education in the North Country region, including building partnerships with local police departments, courts, crisis centers, and culturally specific community groups. Travel within the state and to national conferences will be necessary.
The DVAP Staff Attorney will be based in NHLA’s Berlin office. NHLA has a remote work policy and will consider a mix of remote and on-site work for this position. Staff members are provided with the necessary equipment (such as laptop computers) to work from their homes. Candidates should keep in mind that the DVAP Staff Attorney will primarily be representing North Country clients but may occasionally represent clients in other regions. Extensive travel throughout New Hampshire, but centered in the North Country, is a requirement. Occasional travel out of state, for example to national conferences, is anticipated. Travel reimbursement including mileage is provided.
Duties:
- Advise and represent victim/survivor clients in civil protective order cases, divorce and parenting cases, and occasionally in other case types, with an emphasis on working with North Country clients;
- Implement NHLA’s holistic, client-centered approach to civil legal aid, including: provide trauma-informed representation (training is provided); and provide culturally-competent representation (training is provided);
- Engage with community organizations, including presenting community education programs;
- Participate as an active member of NHLA’s Berlin office including a mix of remote work and on-site work in Berlin.
- Law degree and license to practice in New Hampshire, or eligibility for admission on motion.
- Ability to travel routinely within New Hampshire.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other practitioners, advocates, and organizations.
- Commitment to and interest in expanding knowledge about domestic violence, poverty, and access to justice.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe.
- Experience working alongside low-income clients and communities and/or experience working with victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking a plus.
- Ability to speak Spanish or another language in addition to English a plus.

Salary/Benefits:
This position is considered exempt for the purpose of federal wage/hour law. Salary DOE, plus benefits package including medical/dental insurance, retirement plan, and generous paid time off. Purely by way of example, the anticipated salary for an attorney with no law practice experience would be $56,560 and the anticipated salary for an attorney with 10 years’ law practice experience would be $73,283.
