Position Description: 

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks Senior Accountant

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) fights to secure justice for the low-income populations, including Native American and migrant populations, throughout the state. NMLA is committed to helping low-income people struggle to access food, shelter, security and preserve their unique cultural heritage.

Ours is one of New Mexico's largest law firms and has 11 offices across the state. Through community outreach, videoconferencing, and a centralized telephone and online intake system, NMLA strives to serve clients regardless of their distance to a physical office.

The Senior Accountant reports directly to the CFO. It is an exempt position responsible for providing financial support for a multi-office non-profit organization in Albuquerque with an annual budget of at least $9M. Duties include but are not limited to general ledger maintenance, bank and account reconciliations, financial report preparations, and ensuring company-wide internal controls. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills are required. A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail is needed.

Responsibilities:

Manage all general ledger and subsidiary journals, accounts receivables, and cash flow forecasting.
Prepare and process general ledger transactions and post journal entries.
Perform payroll allocations and fund reconciliations
Prepare invoices for grants and contracts.
Reconcile accounts receivable monthly
Perform all cash account reconciliations for all relevant bank accounts
Assist in all reporting requirements
Work closely with the CFO on budgets, projections, and other grant-related requirements.
Assist in generating monthly financial statements and analysis.
Assist CFO in the annual financial and any other audits as required.
Maintain fixed asset inventory.
Maintain and Improve Chart of Accounts
Ensure internal controls and seek to improve existing internal controls
Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

Working knowledge of GAAP
Knowledge of accounting practices relevant to non-profit accounting.
Knowledge of computer-based accounting software, particularly MIP preferred, and excellent Microsoft Office skills, including high-level Excel skills required.
Excellent analytical and organizational skills
Willingness to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
Team-player with a positive attitude and the ability to interact with all levels of the organization

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. A year for a year experience will substitute for four years of education.
At least three (3) years of related experience.
Prior work experience in non-profit organizations preferred.
Knowledge of non-profit accounting standards

It is an exempt, full-time, salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience and competitive with other non-profit organizations.
