LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, our Farmworker Law Project services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office.

LASMNY is actively seeking one (1) self-motivated full-time Legal Secretary. The Legal Secretary role is a first point of contact to serve our clients. Responsible for managing the front desk, answering phones, handling incoming mail/emails, data entry and providing all other administrative/clerical support as needed. This position is based in our Watertown office and reports to a Managing Attorney.
Essential Job Functions
• Under Managing Attorney supervision, must handle assigned files and assist with delivering quality legal services;
• Effectively and efficiently communicate with clients and applicants for service over the phone or in person;
• Prepare and proofread legal correspondence, agreements, petitions, pleadings, motions and interrogatories;
• Schedule client appointments and calendar court appearances;
• Open new cases in our case management system and enter information such as case notes documenting client contacts;
• Conduct administrative tasks as necessary;
• Will be required to comply with all Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures and grant-based reporting requirements.
• Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Job Qualifications
• Two (2) years Legal Secretary or relevant experience;
• Knowledge of legal terminology;
• Experience with legal correspondence and court filing procedures a plus;
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, database management and computerized legal research;
• Familiarity with legal profession and civil legal services for low income individuals, households and communities;
• Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, filing cabinets, computer printers, etc.;
• Ability to work independently, efficiently and collaboratively with others within and outside of LASMNY;
• Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
