LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm. We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego. In addition, our Farmworker Law Project services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office.

LASMNY is actively seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to expand pro bono services to tenants as well as to provide direct representation to tenants. The position is based in our Binghamton office and reports to the Director of Pro Bono Programs.

Essential Job Functions
The attorney will work with judges, bar associations, and other stakeholders to plan and implement expanded pro bono services for tenants. The attorney will also provide direct legal services to tenants on a limited basis. The attorney’s activities will include developing a recruitment and training plan for pro bono attorneys. The attorney will work with bar associations to develop continuing legal education programs to train pro bono attorneys on housing issues. The attorney will implement attorney of the day programs at various housing courts as well as other programs to assist tenants. The attorney will also provide representation, as needed, to cover attorney of the day shifts. The attorney will work with LASMNY pro bono and technology staff, the courts and other stakeholders to develop virtual program components to the extent necessary during the pandemic. The attorney will be required to comply with all LASMNY policies and procedures and grant-based reporting requirements.

Requirements: 

Job Qualifications
Law degree from an accredited law school. New York State Bar admission is required. Prior experience with pro bono programs and/or housing related experience is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will possess excellent research, writing, communications and organizational skills. The position also requires strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, volunteers, and court personnel. Must be able to work independently, efficiently and also collaboratively with others both within and outside LASMNY. Commitment to serving indigent community members. Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
