Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking a,nd related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Senior Staff Attorney, Anti-Trafficking Initiative, supervises the representation of survivors of human trafficking before federal immigration agencies and federal courts. In addition, the Senior Staff Attorney educates the public, government, social service, legal, medical, and law enforcement communities about issues relating to immigrant survivors of human trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence, and advocates for legislative and policy changes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Advocates for trafficking clients in a wide variety of legal and social systems, including immigration, criminal justice, landlord/tenant, public benefits, etc.
• Represent survivors of trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), as well as before federal courts.
• Supervise pro bono and junior staff attorneys and legal interns in cases before USCIS and EOIR with a focus on Nonimmigrant Status and removal proceedings.
• Represent Sanctuary for Families at community events, and on advocacy committees and task forces.
• Provide legal technical assistance through local and national listservs for attorneys serving domestic violence and trafficked communities.
• Collaborate with state and federal law enforcement and government agencies, community-based organizations, and the medical community to improve systemic responses to trafficked individuals; educate and provide technical assistance concerning immigration issues affecting immigrant survivors of sex trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence.
• Contribute to Sanctuary's efforts to educate the public, government, legal, medical, and social service communities about issues pertinent to immigrant survivors of trafficking; develop written materials and curriculum for such purposes.
• Provide technical legal assistance to community-based and other social and legal services organizations.
• Perform any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by Director.
• Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction;
• At least five years of related legal experience;
• Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills;
• Excellent judgment and common sense;
• Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and communication skills;
• Excellent supervisory skills;
• Experience working in the fields of gender-based violence and immigration preferred;
• Ability to work independently and under pressure;
• Ability to work well with people of diverse educational, cultural, and professional backgrounds;
• Ability to inspire and motivate;
• Demonstrated understanding of different national, cultural, and religious backgrounds; and
• Fluency in a community language other than English is strongly preferred, especially Mandarin or Spanish.
