The Department of Fair Employment and Housing is the state agency charged with enforcing California’s civil rights laws. The mission of the Department of Fair Employment and Housing is to protect the people of California from unlawful discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations and from hate violence.

The DFEH is the largest state civil rights enforcement agency in the country. It enforces the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Unruh Civil Rights Act, Disabled Persons Act, Ralph Civil Rights Act, and the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The Department has jurisdiction over both private and public entities operating within the State of California, including corporate entities, private sector companies that contract with the State of California, and all State departments and local governments.

The DFEH receives, investigates and initiates individual and systemic discrimination complaints in its five offices throughout California. DFEH’s Legal Division litigates individual, class, group and systemic cases in all California jurisdictions, including state and federal courts. It also leads education and outreach efforts to civil rights stakeholder. DFEH’s Legal Division employs over thirty attorneys and staff throughout California.

Under the direction of the Chief Counsel or Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney IV will perform the most sensitive and complex legal work including assignments involving cases of the highest degree of difficulty in accordance to the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Ralph Civil Rights Act, Unruh Civil Rights Act and the Disabled Persons Act.
