Position Description: 

The Center for Survivor Agency & Justice is looking for a junior attorney to serve as the Manager of Capacity Building. They will play an integral role in CSAJ’s work to enhance economic justice for survivors, primarily by leading CSAJ’s efforts to enhance economic advocacy within the field via training, technical assistance, and partnership/coalition building. We’re looking for applicants with passion for economic justice, experience advocating for survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, a J.D. and experience in direct legal representation or advocacy, and experience with (or willingness to learn) about national and/or federally funded projects, partnership and coalition building.

The Manager of Capacity Building will report directly to CSAJ’s Executive Director, and work in close collaboration with the Director of Research & Programs, and will coordinate and collaborate with a coalition of on-the-ground consumer, economic, and advocacy experts, consultants, trainers, and organizational partners.

The Manager of Capacity Building will advance economic justice for survivors by driving efforts that enhance the capacity of the advocacy field to meet survivors' needs and create broad organizational, community, and systems change. Capacity building efforts associated with this position include: providing individual technical assistance and training to advocates, attorneys, and organizations, developing advocacy resources, cultivating networks of on-the-ground experts, and offering legal and non-legal advocacy expertise to CSAJ's mission, including research and systems change. Critical to all aspects of this work are partnership building and an eye for systems change and broad impact. This position will work closely with CSAJ’s network of advisors and partners and work to expand our coalitions to benefit economic justice initiatives.

Specific roles and responsibilities

Manage all training and technical assistance activities, including supervising staff (as developed) and coordinating expert advisors and consultants. Technical assistance and training efforts for this role have a focus on enhancing individual level advocacy among on-the-ground attorneys and non-legal advocates, programs, statewide coalitions, and national entities or initiatives.
A primary responsibility for this position is to develop an e-course for our Access to Justice for Survivor Project on economic advocacy for non-lawyer legal advocates from across the country. This includes managing and collaborating with partners to develop curriculum , and overseeing coordination, logistical, and grant/administrative aspects of the training.
Developing, coordinating, and facilitating other training and technical assistance activities related to the Consumer Rights for Domestic Violence Survivors Initiative (including national webinars, peer exchange calls, and leading a Coerced Debt Working Group), and other demonstration site initiatives aimed at equipping organizations and advocates with tools to enhance economic advocacy.
Providing and coordinating all technical assistance and training, including supervising CSAJ’s Project Coordinator in intake, tracking and monitoring, and grant reporting.
Producing and managing the development of written legal and advocacy materials and resources.

To carry out the responsibilities above, the Manager of Capacity Building will:
Track and monitor all training and technical assistance efforts, with support from CSAJ’s Project Coordinator.
Manage and nurture relationships and work to expand CSAJ’s cadre of Expert Advisors and Organizational Partners that contribute our work.
Develop and maintain project work plans, executing all grant reporting within their portfolio.
Provide day-to-day management of project budgets within their portfolio, in consultation with the Director of Finance and the Executive Director.
Recruit and supervise all legal interns, with support and oversight as needed from the Executive Director.
Execute and/or supervise project-related communications (training announcements, webinars, resource development, spotlights, etc.).
Develop and manage content for email, website, and social media platforms, including special projects and development efforts, as requested or needed.
Coordinate meetings, logistics, and provide general administrative support to projects and the organization as a whole.

CSAJ’s long-term vision is to build internal capacity for broader systems change, policy analysis and advocacy, and impact litigation. This position will contribute to that growth by:
Working with the Director of Research & Programs to strengthen and direct program strategy and contribute legal expertise and analysis to research efforts
Representing CSAJ on national task forces and collaborative initiatives
Contributing to state/national policy and system advocacy, as able, such as: writing or coordinating public comments, offering public testimony, signing-on to letters, organizing campaigns, writing articles and op-eds, etc.
Leveraging training/TA work to help strategize and build capacity for CSAJ’s longer term systems change work, including drafting program plans, convening partners, grant-writing, and otherwise executing strategic priorities.
Contributing to organizational development activities including project ideation, grant writing, funder research/outreach, and participating in organizational strategic planning.
Presenting to and working with the Board of Directors as requested by the Executive Director.

Requirements: 

What you bring:
A J.D. and one to five years of direct legal representation/advocacy, preferably in domestic violence/sexual assault, family, consumer rights, housing, economic justice, anti-poverty, and/or race equity/racial justice law. We will consider candidates with an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that will fulfill the basic responsibilities of this position.
Experience managing multi-year, federal or state-funded program grants, preferred. Familiarity with the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women or similar funders, including reporting systems, a plus.
Project management includes articulating needs based on CSAJ’s understanding of the field, setting program goals and objectives based on needs, planning and executing activity calendars and work plans, and monitoring progress and sharing lessons learned with staff, partners, and funders. We will support learning or training in project management with the right candidate.
Experience working with and building partnerships across sectors.
Desire to contribute to impactful project work as well as help steer the growth of a rapidly expanding yet lean national nonprofit organization.
Excitement to bring perspective and experience from direct advocacy/representation to macro-level and national, yet nuanced, work.
Experience or interest in economic justice, anti-poverty lawyering, asset building, preferred.

Has come from and/or worked with diverse communities and understands current conditions (and their roots) facing communities marginalized by virtue of race, ethnicity, citizenship, ability, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and at the intersections. Has an interest in and perspective/experience to share in broad ranging social justice issues as well as a passion to learn from others.
