Job Summary/General Purpose of Job
The ABA's Immigration Justice Project (IJP) Staff Attorney will provide direct legal representation to clients in immigration proceedings, the coordination and supervision of pro bono representation by volunteer attorneys, or the delivery of services through the Legal Orientation Program.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
-Direct legal representation of immigrants and asylum seekers in removal proceedings, bond proceedings, and appeals before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), with a focus on representation of clients detained in immigration custody.
-Collaboration with the Mental Health Case Manager to help clients obtain release from immigration custody and to remain stable as they return to the community from custody.
-Collaboration with and participation in the work of the Legal Orientation Program at immigration detention facility.
-Participation and preparation for both internal legal team training as well as public-facing training sessions.
-Have reliable transportation to travel to off-site work locations.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
-Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements: 

Required Education, Qualifications, Experience
Active membership in good standing in a state bar (California State Bar membership preferred) or the District of Columbia Bar, with no significant disciplinary history (will consider candidates awaiting bar exam results). Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish, including legal Spanish. Comfort with working with colleagues and clients from all over the world, with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as clients living with serious physical and mental disabilities (legal internship, law school clinic, or non-legal experience will be taken into consideration). Familiarity with legal research tools, strong written and oral advocacy skills, and a commitment to participate fully in training and development of these skills.

Preferred Education, Qualifications, Experience
-Experience within the local, regional, or national immigration advocacy communities.
-Prior experience providing legal services to low-income people, especially for clients in criminal or immigration custody.
-Experience in professional education, training, or nonprofit program development, especially in the direct legal services areas.
-Professional dedication to legal advocacy on behalf of people in custody, members of oppressed and marginalized groups, and people with a prior history of involvement in the criminal and immigration legal systems.

Extent of Travel Required in the Job
As a normal course of business, this job will typically require travel to the Otay Mesa Detention Center approximately 25% of the time.

Salary range: 
$61,740 - $68,450
