Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the non-profit legal services program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income residents of western and central Massachusetts. CLA has over 100 dedicated, talented staff working across multiple offices, and a budget of $12 million. Our core work includes effective client-centered advocacy and robust outreach to and partnerships with our client communities.
CLA seeks a full-time housing attorney to work in its Hampden County (Springfield) office for a period of one year. The attorney will be funded by a special grant from the City of Holyoke to assist Holyoke tenants with homelessness prevention. The attorney's anti-displacement work will focus on defending tenants in eviction cases; helping tenants seek court orders for temporary housing and repairs when their buildings are condemned or made unsafe by natural or other disasters; and assisting tenants overturn denials of and termination from affordable housing programs. It is anticipated that the attorney will engage in a high-volume eviction defense practice as the state's eviction moratorium ends. The attorney will participate in CLA's Housing Court lawyer-for-the-day program, which may be virtual or in-person. The attorney will have significant client contact, will engage in community outreach and education, and will work closely with the City of Holyoke and community partners. Some grant-writing and grant-reporting may be required form time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the Massachusetts Bar, or eligible to sit for the Massachusetts Bar examination, or entitled to practice under a Massachusetts practice rule. Experience in land-lord tenant strongly preferred, as is fluency in Spanish. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A demonstrated dedication to social justice, sensitivity to the needs and concern of individuals from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to working with low-income communities.
