Virginia Defenders- Indigent Defense Commission is seeking to fill a Senior Trial Attorney position for the Arlington/Falls Church Public Defender’s Office that will serve our mission of protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high- quality legal advocacy. The qualified candidate should be committed to advocating on behalf of indigent clients. The Senior Trial Attorney position reports to the Public Defender of the Arlington Office and is employed at will.
Duties:
Duties include conducting client and witness interviews, working with staff investigators to investigate cases, filing pretrial motions and litigating motions. The attorney will be responsible for trying cases in the General District, Juvenile, and Circuit Courts, as well as identifying appropriate sentencing alternatives for clients. The attorney will also handle criminal appeals.

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission is required for consideration for this full-time, salaried position. Must possess exceptional trial skills and the ability to advocate effectively in plea negotiations. Knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence is required. The qualified candidate must have the ability to argue legal positions persuasively, master complex subject matter and thoroughly prepare cases. The ability to learn and accept constructive criticism is important as well as the ability to respond quickly and effectively in addressing issues and questions. The qualified applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and remain organized. To qualify for the Senior Trial Attorney position the applicant must have extensive experience trying cases to juries, at least three (3) years of experience in indigent defense and at least five (5) years of experience in criminal defense.
